   3 I have some comments on today's episode of
   4 Free as in Freedom: [0x22: Elder's Methods of FOSS Activism][faif_0x22].
   5 Obviously you should listen to it (and add FaiF to your
   6 favorite podcatcher.  You will be the *forth* listener! :) ).
   7 This oggcast is the first in a series from the
   8 first [Legal Issues DevRoom][fosdem_legal_issues] at FOSDEM
   9 which [Karen][kaz], [Bradley][bkuhn], [Richard Fontana][fontana] and
  10 I organized.

  12 I think Bradley was critical of Ambjörn's talk not enumerating
  13 all the collaboration that has taken place in the FLOSS
  14 community. To be fair Ambjörn himself said he had tried
  15 to enumerate various examples (and has 196 or so pointers
  16 on his blog ... see the [[Speakers|/fosdem/LegalIssuesDevRoom/Speakers]]
  17 page for blog links). Karen makes the point that it is
  18 precisely these sort of events where we can learn about
  19 activisim across a broad range of our communities.

  21 I appreciate Ambjörn's view that we can develop and
  22 use various norms and legal tools to help promote
  23 Internet Freedom generally, but sometimes activism is
  24 necessary to educate and move public policy (e.g. the
  25 SOPA protests). Indeed we seem increasingly under threat
  26 of being limited to walled application gardens or even being
  27 literally firewalled from the open Internet.

  29 The key takeaway, I believe, is we need to collaborate *more*
  30 between Free Software, Open Source, Free Culture and
  31 broader Internet Freedom communities generally.
  32 In a conversation with [Mike Linksvayer][mike_linksvayer_blog] after
  33 the DevRoom session we discussed the challenge from a FLOSS
  34 project level of designing the licensing of software and
  35 non-software artificacts such that both could evolve
  36 together over time.  This is a tricky issue which involves
  37 "or later" (plus licensing) versions and software/non-software
  38 licensing compatibility.  We shared the observation -- apropos
  39 to Ambjörn's talk -- that many humanitarian or otherwise
  40 public activisim efforts often don't make FLOSS part of their
  41 agenda (and, in fact, may not even be aware of it).
  42 We need to do a much better job at this collaboration and
  43 cross-community education.

  45 As for the logistics of the DevRoom allow my to publicly
  46 express a *mea culpa*. I have been to FOSDEM before and
  47 I know how challenging it is to fit "a 20lb conference
  48 in a 10lb bag" (as [@spot][spot] said). I knew that 30 minute
  49 sesssions would be short... We had so many great proposals
  50 that I was happy to hear from as many as possible.
  51 However it is true that this was ultimately *too* short
  52 and the format did not adequately allow for Q/A, discussion,
  53 time to change DevRooms and setup for the next speaker.
  54 And I especially want to apologize to anyone who was waiting
  55 outside the DevRoom that I steadfastly refused to let in :-| .
  56 I didn't want the FOSDEM volunteer organizers to have
  57 the University withdraw support for future conferences due
  58 to violating fire codes.

  62 the talks as they become available. And, yes, we'll hopefully
  63 get a bigger room and plan for more discussion time
